The curved lines observed in the topography of the island, the oreum (volcanic cones), and stone walls are expressed by the dome and winding path of its garden. The windy weather of the island is expressed by the shapes of the fence and windows. By incorporating such shapes defining the island, the museum was designed as a park that integrates with the surrounding Sarabong Park.
The museum building features a symbolic spatial organization with the natural environment and history of Jeju incorporated with the external space. Its roof was modeled after the thatched rooftops commonly seen on the island, and the building was finished with granite and scoria bricks. Outdoor exhibits are optimally arranged in the large garden with uneven topographic features.
