The Stones that Made Tombs

It’s no exaggeration to say that people from Jeju lived together with stones. They were born in houses with stone walls, plowed rocky fields or collected oysters from the rocky sea bottom, and after they died they lay in tombs made using stone. The outdoor exhibition area of the museum provides a partial introduction to the tombs of people from Jeju from the Bronze Age through the Joseon era. This drawing shows the stones used in tombs from the early Joseon era. During this era, the trend was to pile square-shaped stones around the burial mound.
