In the past, these were placed in front of homes in Jeju. Wooden boards were placed between them to serve as a gate. When all the boards were taken down it indicated that the person was at home. Only one board meant the person had momentarily gone somewhere nearby, two boards meant they would be back by evening, and three boards meant they had gone very far away.
