Doldam (Stone Wall)

Doldam (Stone Wall)

The low, irregular stone wall made of black basalt is a rather friendly sight that can be seen throughout Jeju. The stone wall of Jeju sometimes runs around a house and forms the nostalgic space of Ole, or forms a Sandam by surrounding hills, meadow, or graveyards. It also makes Batdam, stone wall marking the boundaries of farms, or Wondam, which is a stone wall for fishing. The stone wall calms the strong winds of Jeju, protecting houses and crops from harm. The Doldam represents the cultural heritage of Jeju people, who pioneered the harsh volcanic island with wisdom and insights. The Doldam here is a recreated version of Wedam, the traditional stone wall of Jeju, built in a layered form by the masons (Dolchengi) from the village of Gashiri. Inside the wall is a display of household tools made with stones, which were used in the daily life of Jeju people.
