Dolhareubang (Stone Grandfather)

Dolhareubang (Stone Grandfather)

Dolhareubang is a replica of the stone statues erected outside the gate of the old metropolitan prefectures of Jeju, Jeongeui-hyeon and Daejeong-hyeon of Jeju-mok, which now stands in front of Gwandeokjung. The name Dolhareubang is a modern name of the statue, which used to be called Wuseokmok, Museokmok, Ongjungmok, or Beoksumeori. The Dolhareubang is believed to have functioned in a similar way as the Jangseung, Korean Totems erected throughout the Korean mainland, with its religious and shamanistic functions for guarding or marking the boundaries of the village. Now, 47 dolhareubangs remain in Jeju.
