We invite you to visit Jeju National Museum`s special exhibition of Sehando and the life and work of Kim Jeonghui (1786-1856). The exhibition runs from April 5 to May 29. Best known by his pen-name Chusa, this great scholar and literary artist was exiled to Jeju in 1840. He spent over eight years on the island, where his deep loneliness and frustration with life as an exile gave birth to his masterpiece of painting and calligraphy, Sehando (Wintry Days). He created it in 1844 as a gift of thanks for his outstanding disciple Yi Sangjeok (1804-1865), who remained loyal to his teacher during Kim`s years of severe hardship. Sehando passed through several hands over the years. Thanks to its careful preservation and the generous donation of Sohn Chang Kun (b. 1929) in 2020, Sehando now belongs to all Korean people. The National Museum of Korea held an exhibition of the painting to celebrate this gift, and we are proud to put it on display in Jeju for the first time since its creation here 178 years ago. Our exhibition includes 13 other works of art, including a portrait of the artist by one of his disciples and a painting by Kim Jeonghui entitled Orchid of Non-Duality, both donated by Son Chang Kun. The size of Sehando is matched by its depth of meaning. We invite you to encounter this work of art in its birthplace and come to a new appreciation of the storied history of its production, long journey and return.
