Jeju horses were one of the most important products that were used as tribute tax to the central government during the Joseon Dynasty. There were ten pastures encircling Mount Halla where they raised horses, and one of the important duties of Jeju county officials was to look after the condition of these horses as well as their eventual inland transportation. Here on display is costume worn by malteuri, or the horse herdsmen. Also on display are various handcrafted items made of horsetail. These malteuri herdsmen took their jobs very seriously because they were financially responsible for any loss or death of horses.
