46. Portrait of Jeju Magistrate Lee Iktae

내용보기

This is a portrait of Lee Iktae (1633-1704), who served as the Magistrate of Jeju during the reign of King Sukjong for two years. Appointed in 1694, Magistrate Lee oversaw the restoration of major government buildings used for military training and defense. Magistrate Lee saw that the Jeju district lacked historical records of the region, and thus compiled Jiyeongnok, which recorded various events of the island including an eyewitness account of Hendrick Hamel (1630-1692) and his ship, which set sail from the Netherlands but was later shipwrecked in Jeju.
