SHEER BEAUTY, THE WHITE PORCELAIN OF JOSEON PERIOD
2009.3.31~5.10
Joseon white porcelain portraying moderate beauty with a pure white color had played a leading role of Joseon ceramics. Pure white porcelain represents moderateness and elegance at which a royal family and the gentry aimed, while white porcelain with paintings shows freedom and tranquility behind moderateness.
Pure white porcelain, including the Dal-hangari [jar in the shape of a full moon](Treasure No. 1437), exhibits the prototype of Joseon white porcelain. It shows the life and the ideal of the Joseon people. There are also various types of white porcelain with paintings such as that in underglaze cobalt-blue, iron-brown, and copper, including the jar with the design of a grapevine and a monkey (National Treasure No. 93) and the water dropper with the painting of eight scenes of So-sang (Treasure No. 1329). White porcelain with paintings provides us with an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Joseon white porcelain beyond the beauty of a pure white color.
This special exhibit of Joseon white porcelain will be a wonderful opportunity to appreciate its pure beauty, and admire the lives and the dreams of our ancestors.
